Background

Gerber Legendary Blades was established in 1939 by Joe Gerber. Joe was the founder and owner of Gerber Advertising Agency, which opened May of 1910. Joe commissioned carving knife sets from a Portland knifemaker named David Murphy to give as client gifts at Christmastime. People clamored over the quality of these gift knives, which inspired Gerber to make arrangements with Murphy to produce knives in quantity. The Gerber knife business was founded in 1939, and the first sale was to the Abercrombie & Fitch in New York. In 1987, the company was sold to Fiskars, a Finnish cutlery manufacturer.

Gerber threw it's towel into the multitool ring in 1991 with the introduction of their now-famous Multi-Plier. The tool was a great success, and variations of its signature sliding jaw mechanism continue to be produced by the company today. Several other multitool designs are also available, demonstrating the remarkable variety and innovation that folks have come to expect from Gerber multitools.
