Carolina Knife & Tool Micro Gadget

The Micro Gadget uses a unique clamshell-opening method to contain its blades. No other multitool is similar. However, the mechanism is overly complex, and clumsy to operate. A flaw in the design prevents the blades from locking open as intended. Despite great quality of individual components, the overall design shortcomings causes the tool to suffer.

Handle/Frame

The frame consists of two center channels attached back-to-back, from which the blades pivot. Folding over the blades in a clamshell fashion are two covers. The covers have a complex spring-and slot arrangement that prevents the second cover from opening if the first one is already open. It generally takes the user some practice to become accustomed to.

Surface finish is highly polished stainless.

CAROLINA KNIFE & TOOL is stamped on one side of both covers. micro gadget is stamped on the other. TO LOCK PUSH FORWARD AND THEN DOWN and PATENTS PENDING is stamped on the edge.

Blades and Tools

Tabbed spacers are used between each blade, totally eliminating blade clumping issues.

Locking Mechanism

Package literature claims that all blades on the Micro Gadget lock open, but this is not the case in reality. The intent was to unfold a blade, then close its clamshell cover to engage a notch near the pivot. However, backspring pressure on the remaining blades causes them to push outward, preventing the clamshell cover from engaging the notch. Only by tightly squeezing the covers during use is a user able to keep the blades locked open.
